A Neo-Spiritual

William M. Tarnowski

A hymn to the ancient gods in the spirit of Emperor Flavius Claudius Iulianus, commonly known as "Julian the Apostate" (332 A.D.-363 A.D.; ruled 360 A.D.-363 A.D.), who attempted to restore the old pagan religion in Rome.

Say a prayer to Aphrodite in her skimpy little nightie,
While she may be somewhat flighty, she's good enough for me!

[Chorus] Give me that old time religion, polytheistic religion!
Give me that pagan religion, it's good enough for me!

Sing a hymn to haughty Hera; to old Zeus she is a terror,
I don't know how he can bear her but she's good enough for me!

[Chorus]

Do avoid dark Proserpina; you will find no goddess meaner;
'Tis best to have never seen her and she's good enough for me!

[Chorus]

On your knees before Demeter! Of them all there's no one sweeter,
Don't you ever dare to cheat her. She's good enough for me!

[Chorus]

Let us drink to pudgy Bacchus; if we don't he'll surely whack us,
and his satyrs will attack us! He's good enough for me!

[Chorus]

Beware the Egyptian Isis; she is waiting to entice us,
but she's in a mid-life crisis! She's good enough for me!

[Chorus]

Never blaspheme lithe Apollo or bad consequences follow:
In your spilt blood you will wallow. He's good enough for me!

[Chorus]

Forget Christian-, Muslim-, Jew-gods; look to the pagan not-new gods,
There are more than quite a few gods and they're good enough for me!

[Chorus]
